As Halloween approaches, Langham Place in Hong Kong is set to host a unique celebration, blending sound art and visual illustration in an exhibition titled "Fantastic Black & White: Mong Kok’s Parallel World." This event is co-organized by Langham Place, cultural art platform dl.thevoc, which uses sound to share surreal urban tales of Mong Kok. International award-winning comic artist Pen So also contributes to the event, offering city dwellers a chance to momentarily escape their hectic urban lives and immerse themselves in a mysterious world of Mong Kok, depicted through black-and-white line art. 萬聖節的臨近，香港的朗豪坊將掀起一場獨特的慶祝活動，結合聲音藝術與視覺插畫，帶來名為《奇幻黑白：旺角異世界》的展覽。這次活動由朗豪坊聯手文化藝術平台【電笠】「人人和音」以聲音分享超現實的旺角都市奇聞，及國際得獎漫畫家PEN SO共同策劃，讓市民在繁忙的都市生活中，暫時逃離現實，沉浸於一個以黑白線條描繪旺角的迷離異象世界。

Late last year, local comic artist Pen So (@penso) won the Silver Prize at the Japan International MANGA Award—dubbed the “Oscars of Manga”—for his comic anthology Memories Meet. Out of 503 entries from 77 countries and regions, Pen So's work stood out with its nostalgic portrayal of Hong Kong and its imaginative, fantastical storytelling. While the artwork seems to reflect on a bygone Hong Kong, the fantasy narrative subtly conveys the message that we shouldn’t cling too tightly to the past. Instead, by moving forward and accumulating history, we can create future collective memories. On October 21, Pen So will host the Memories Meet exhibition, showcasing hand-drawn originals and video works from the anthology. The exhibition brings the story of the protagonists, internet singer Li Mei Yee and illustrator Cheung Pak Lok, from their surreal black-and-white world into the vibrant colors of reality. Step Into a Comic Universe at the Exhibition The ZtoryTeller Gallery will transform into the world of Memories Meet, allowing visitors to journey between reality and fantasy. Through hidden clues scattered throughout the venue, attendees will be guided to sound installations playing a comic audio drama. The drama’s conclusion, created and performed by radio host and lyricist Oscar Lee (@oscarlee), will bring the story to life. On-Site Highlights: Hear the Story Finale and Per Se’s Latest Single Oscar portrays Cheung Pak Lok, the male protagonist from Pen So's comic, in the audio drama sequel Memories Meet: The Aftermath. Meanwhile, the female protagonist Li Mei Yee is voiced by Sandy (@sandyminimal). The exhibition will also feature a curated playlist from local band Per Se (@persehk) and a hidden preview of their latest single, which visitors can discover and listen to. Exclusive Reissue of the Comic Anthology The highly anticipated reissue of Memories Meet will debut at the exhibition with a brand-new cover illustration and a mini-book titled Memories Meet: Outro. The mini-book serves as a prelude to the comic audio drama and includes a QR code for Oscar’s narrated version. It can be inserted into either the first edition or the reissue of the comic anthology. Kowloon Walled City was an ungoverned but controlled by local triads and had high rates of prostitution, gambling, and drug abuse. The city has been demolished in the 1990s and has become a legendary place in Hong Kong.A few years ago I drew a graphic novel "City of Darkness: A Romantic Escape". The story was created by Mr YuYi. In this exhibition, I have selected a few works that I hope will give everyone a better understanding of this place. 九龍城砦は統治されていませんでしたが、地元のトライアドによって管理されており、売春、ギャンブル、薬物乱用の割合が高かった。これらの都市は 1990 年代に取り壊され、香港の伝説的な場所になりました。 数年前、グラフィック ノベル「City of Darkness: A Romantic Escape」を描きました。 物語はYuYi氏によって作成されました。 今回の展覧会では、この場所をより理解していただける作品をいくつか選んでみました。

From structures intertwining the modern and retro designs, varied cityscapes, to traditional customs and performance, Hong Kong always showcases a facade of integrating East and West, and blending the old with the new. All kinds of cultures, history, stories, and affection are entailed. Be it the Hong Kong local or overseas tourist, one can discover the uniqueness and charm of the city everywhere, appreciate the beautiful view, and enjoy it. Presented by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels, curated by Hong Kong Arts Centre (Comix Home Base), Wanderers’ Land—Cityscapes in Hong Kong is a touring pop-up exhibition being held in France, Belgium, and Portugal respectively. It exhibits a curation of drawings about Hong Kong featured spots, bringing foreign audiences to look around Hong Kong from a local's perspective. Through this pop-up exhibition, it is also hoped that Hong Kong artists and creations can be introduced to the world in order to promote the long-term development of the Hong Kong local arts and culture. In France and Belgium, the pop-up exhibition features drawings by local comics artist Pen So. Using a monochromatic palette of black and white, he depicts six local iconic spots, namely Tung Tak Pawn Shop, Hong Kong tram, Quarry Bay 'Monster Building', Lion Rock, Mido Cafe, and Dai Kam Lung Company. With his intricate strokes, he authentically illustrates the urban characteristics with local stories, meanwhile, shows his soft spot for the place where he grew up. 從現代與復古交錯的建築物，五光十色的城市景觀到富傳統特色的習俗表演，香港都展示了中西合璧且新舊交融的面貌，背後更訴說著各種文化歷史、故事和情懷。不論是香港本地人或是外地遊客，都能從這座城市各處探索到不同的獨特魅力，欣賞美麗的風景線，享受其中。 由香港駐布魯塞爾經濟貿易辦事處主辦、香港藝術中心（動漫基地）策劃的限定展覽《遊人之境——香城地景》分別於法國、比利時與葡萄牙舉辦，展出一系列香港特色景地的畫作，帶領海外觀眾以本地人的視角，四處遊歷香港。透過是次展覽，亦希望向國際推廣香港藝術家及作品，長遠推動本地文化藝術發展。 在法國站與比利時站中，限定展覽展示本地漫畫家蘇頌文的作品。蘇頌文以黑白畫作描繪出6個具標誌性的香港景物，包括同德大押、香港電車、鰂魚涌「怪獸大廈」、獅子山、美都餐室和大金龍蔘茸海味店。細膩密集的線條下，寫實地還原城市面貌與特色，將背後的在地故事記錄下來，更拼湊出他對這片成長地的情有獨鍾。

Life is all about the details. By incorporating art and culture into home spaces and daily life, a new experience and refined taste are brought to living environments. At.home is hosting its first collaboration with renowned Hong Kong comic artist Pen So (So Chung Man) for a solo exhibition, MEMORIES at.home. This comic-themed exhibition will take place from October 14 to November 5, 2023, at the flagship store of at.home in Causeway Bay, featuring over 30 artworks, including hand-drawn originals! Pen So will also be present on the opening day, October 14, to share stories behind his creations up close with visitors. Experiencing Hong Kong Through Black-and-White Comics: Integrating Art and Culture into Home Spaces Last year, Pen So was awarded the Silver Prize at the 16th Japan International Manga Award, one of the highest honors in the global manga community. Starting from October 14, the MEMORIES at.home solo exhibition by at.home x Pen So will showcase over 30 unique pieces, including hand-drawn originals—the largest collection to date—at the at.home flagship store in Causeway Bay. The exhibition captures new and old scenes of Hong Kong in black-and-white, focusing on the iconic Mobile Shanty Town series. This event aims to combine artworks with furniture, blending artistic expression with everyday living spaces to create a new immersive comic experience and foster deeper connections with the audience. Experiencing Hong Kong Through Black-and-White Comics: Integrating Art and Culture into Home Spaces Pen So shared that he has previously held exhibitions such as Memories of My Home. The title of this solo exhibition, MEMORIES at.home, carries profound meaning—not only emphasizing the first collaboration with furniture brand at.home but also highlighting and deepening the concept of "home." For this exhibition, Pen So has created new works specifically as the event’s centerpiece. These new pieces set the Mobile Shanty Town series in Causeway Bay, using the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter as the backdrop.
